 Sweets are an essential part of the Sri Lankan culture, deeply related to the Sinhala and Tamil New Year festival. Several sweet food items are prepared to mark this special occasion. Most of the sweets in Sri Lanka can be identified as traditional sweets authentic to the New Year celebration. Every Buddhist and Hindu households have an elegant new year table adorned with delicious sweets around this festival period. If you walk into a local home during the festival season, you will get the chance to enjoy these sweets and desserts.



Sweets are one of the favorite things of our kids. We often prepare or buy sweets, because all our family members love them. The following list contains our favorite delicious Sri Lankan sweet treats. We shared many of these sweets with our foreign friends during our stay abroad and they enjoyed them a lot. WATALAPPAM

Watalappam is the most famous delicious sweets in Sri Lanka. It is a kind of steamed pudding prepared with jaggery, eggs, coconut milk, and spiced with cardamom.  It can make using either coconut milk or condensed milk. Cashew nuts and various spices, such as cardamom, and vanilla use to enhance the taste and aroma

Watalappam making process is very easy. It is made of steaming egg, jaggery, and milk mixture for 45 Minutes. Then it should keep refrigerated for a few hours to get the best taste. This creamy pudding gives a heavenly taste and you are definitely going to love it. The unique sweet taste of Watalappam is something you’ll never forget once tasted in Sri Lanka

This dessert is deeply related to Sri Lankan culture among all Sinhala, Tamil, and Muslim communities. This is an essential dessert in all Sri Lankan festivals and celebrations. It is also popular during weddings, religious festivals, and other social and family functions. You can taste delicious Watalappam in many restaurants across the country


PENI WALALU

Peni walalu or unduwel is one of the extremely delicious sweets in Sri Lanka. It can literally convert to English as ‘Honey Rings’. It is made by deep-frying coils of ulundu & rice flour mixture and then soaking them in honey or sugar syrup. A combination of Ulundu and rice flour enriched with coconut milk and honey brings the mellow, sweet taste of peni walalu. These crunchy deep-fried delicacies are filled with sweet sugar syrup that is perfect to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Kids are the biggest fans of this candy. It can prepare at home too. But Peni Walalu making process is complicated and needs time and an experienced hand to make them perfectly. Although it needs only a few ingredient, you have to soak the ulundu beans and then ferment the grounded bean paste for quite a long time. With busy, modern lives many people prefer to buy them from a sweet shop. Without a doubt, you are going to love this crunchy sweet delicacy once tasted.
